The income triangle

One risk has three faces. Cover all of them.

Everything your family plans on — the mortgage, the schools, retirement — is funded by one thing: your income. It can stop three ways. Death is only the least likely of them.

If you die

Life insurance

A personally owned life policy can provide a stated death benefit to the named beneficiary, subject to the policy terms. Coverage can be designed around debts, dependants, income replacement and estate goals.

If you get seriously ill

Critical illness

Critical illness insurance can provide a lump sum when a covered condition meets the policy definition and survival period. The benefit amount and covered conditions depend on the contract selected.

If you can't work

Disability insurance

Disability insurance can replace part of eligible income while a covered disability prevents or limits work. Benefit maximums, occupation definitions, waiting periods and tax treatment vary.

A long illness or injury can interrupt income even when life insurance never pays. A complete review considers death, serious illness and disability separately.

Curated, not aggregated

Thirty quotes is not advice.

Comparison tools can be useful for initial research, but a quote ranking alone does not explain contract wording, conversion options, underwriting fit or ownership. Group Shield provides one named BC advisor who is accountable for the recommendation and ongoing service.

How it works

From numbers to covered, without the runaround.

Run your numbers

Use the calculator above. It's anonymous — we designed it that way on purpose. If the numbers make sense to you, take the next step.

One call with your advisor

We confirm your situation, compare live rates across our carriers, and tell you plainly what to buy — and what not to. No pressure, no follow-up drip campaign.

Apply and lock your rate

Applications are electronic. Depending on carrier, age and amount, many clients are approved without medical exams. Your rate is then locked for the full term.

Radical transparency

Exactly what you pay us.

Insurance compensation can be difficult to understand. This page explains the current fee and commission model before you contact us.

Separate claim-support fee currently charged

Group Shield Benefits does not currently charge a separate advice, application, setup or claim-support fee for the services described here. When a policy is placed, the insurer may pay first-year and renewal commissions, and compensation can vary by insurer and product. Your insurer determines the premium based on the product, coverage design and underwriting. Ask about compensation on any recommendation and review the advisor disclosure before proceeding.

Built for how BC actually earns

Who we do our best work for.

Young families

A BC mortgage is not a normal mortgage. Your coverage math is different here, and bank mortgage insurance is usually the wrong answer.

  • Term life sized to real BC housing debt
  • Child riders and education funding
  • Replace bank mortgage insurance with coverage you own

Self-employed & incorporated professionals

No group benefits means no safety net. Disability and critical illness aren't optional when you are the payroll.

  • Own-occupation disability coverage
  • CI as a business-interruption fund

Business owners

Your business is your biggest asset and your biggest liability. Insurance is how partnerships and successions survive bad news.

  • Key-person and buy‑sell funding
  • Continuity planning for owner absence

Straight answers

Questions everyone asks.

Does the buying channel affect the price or product?

Pricing depends on the insurer, product, coverage design and underwriting class. Different channels may offer different products or carrier access. When comparing quotes, confirm that the insurer, product, term, amount, riders and underwriting assumptions are the same. Group Shield does not currently charge a separate advice fee.

Will I need medical testing?

It depends on age, amount, health history, product and insurer. Some applications are decided from the application and available data; others require a telephone interview, records, blood work or a paramedical visit. The insurer determines the requirements.

How should I treat coverage through work?

Workplace coverage can be valuable, but the amount, occupation definition, exclusions, conversion rights and portability vary by plan. Review the booklet and include workplace benefits in a broader needs analysis rather than assuming they are either sufficient or irrelevant.

Why does Group Shield currently work with four insurers?

Group Shield currently places coverage with Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife and Blue Cross. That shelf is narrower than some large brokerages. Recommendations are compared within the available shelf, and product access and material limitations should be disclosed before you apply.

What is the difference between critical illness and disability insurance?

Critical illness coverage can pay a lump sum when a covered condition meets the policy definition and survival period. Disability coverage can pay a monthly benefit while you meet the policy’s disability definition. Benefit amounts, exclusions, tax treatment and payment periods vary.

What support is available at claim time?

Group Shield can help you obtain claim forms, organize required information and communicate with the insurer. The insurer evaluates the claim and decides eligibility under the issued contract.
