Disability & critical illness · Self-employed · British Columbia

You are the payroll. Insure the payroll.

Self-employed people may not have employer-sponsored disability coverage, paid sick leave or a workplace safety net. Disability insurance can replace part of eligible income during a covered disability; critical illness insurance can provide a lump sum when a covered condition meets the policy definition.

The details that decide claims

Three contract terms worth more than the price.

Disability contracts can use different occupation definitions, waiting periods, benefit periods and partial-disability provisions. Compare those terms alongside the premium.

Definition

Own-occupation

The occupation definition is one of the most important clauses. Depending on the contract, own-occupation coverage may pay when you cannot perform the important duties of your specific occupation. Any-occupation definitions usually refer to work for which you are reasonably suited by education, training or experience—not literally any possible job.

Renewability

Non-cancellable

Where a policy is non-cancellable, the insurer cannot change the premium schedule or contract wording except as permitted by the issued policy. Guaranteed-renewable and cancellable contracts provide different protections.

Riders

Partial & residual benefits

Partial or residual benefits may pay when a covered disability reduces working hours or income without stopping work completely. Definitions and calculations vary by policy.

CPP disability has strict eligibility requirements and is not a substitute for reviewing your personal income-protection needs. Benefit amounts and eligibility rules can change, so check the current Government of Canada information.

The general rule

Pay disability premiums personally

The tax treatment of disability premiums and benefits depends on the arrangement and who pays the premiums. Personally paid individual coverage is often treated differently from employer or corporate arrangements. Confirm the intended ownership, payment and tax treatment with your accountant and advisor before applying.

  • Personally paid individual premiums may support tax-free benefits in some circumstances
  • Corporate or employer-paid arrangements can produce different tax results
  • We coordinate this with your accountant before you apply
Where the corporation helps

Corporate structures that do make sense

The corporation is often the right owner for other pieces of the plan — we build the whole structure, not just one policy.

  • Business overhead expense coverage — rent, staff, and leases keep getting paid while you recover
  • Corporately-owned life and CI for key-person and estate planning
  • Health & dental through the corporation when there's no group plan

Straight answers

What self-employed BC clients ask us.

How do insurers verify my income if it varies year to year?

Financial evidence requirements vary by insurer and product. Self-employed applicants may be asked for tax returns, financial statements or other records, and the insurer may average or adjust income under its rules. Provide accurate information and coordinate with your accountant.

What waiting period should I pick?

Match the waiting period to your emergency savings, other benefits and ability to carry expenses. A longer wait may reduce premium but increases the amount you must fund before eligible benefits can begin.

Why do I need critical illness if I have disability coverage?

The contracts respond to different triggers. Critical illness can pay a lump sum when a covered condition meets the definition and survival period. Disability can pay monthly while you meet the disability definition. Either, both or neither may be suitable.

I'm healthy and my work is low-risk. Is this really worth the premium?

Health and occupation can affect eligibility, pricing and available terms. Review the financial impact of a prolonged income interruption and compare the contract with the cost; no policy is automatically suitable simply because you can qualify.

Can I get coverage if I've only been self-employed for a year?

Possibly. Options and benefit maximums depend on financial evidence, occupation, insurer and product. Some newer businesses begin with lower limits or require additional documentation.
